This dress was inspired by the student in my sociology class who thought that all feminists were hairy and butch. I just want to make sure that everyone knows that a feminist can wear whatever the fuck she or he (or both or neither) feels like wearing. My sociology professor loved the dress and she gave me extra credit! I used a potato stamp to make the print, I used a vintage pattern to make the dress, and I embroidered the phrase “This is what a feminist looks like” on the bodice.

FUCK THIS NOIZE. I will gladly take insurrectionist, aggressive, unruly, and militant HAIRY BUTCH queers anyday over the idea that we need to make feminism/feminists less threatening and more doe-eyed kitten-like and palatable in the guise of ~*being anything u wanna be (only qts apply tho cuz UGGOS DO NOT ENTRY!!1!)*~
I’m down with the diy empowerment messg n all, (yes to diy all the way) I just find this original above image/text extremely problematic for parading one version of ~*girrrl power*~ over another (an unaesthetically appealing gender/sexuality-variant kind)… all the while degrading certain expressions of gender/sexuality/identities in the name of ‘progress’. I am not excited about this image, it looks like the same generic 2nd wave liberal feminist images and messages to me wrapped up in a new-looking package…

AND BEHOLD HERE IS THE PROBLEM WITH KATHLEEN HANNA DEIFICATION AND RIOT GRRL BECOMING A FASHION TREND AS OPPOSED TO A CALL FOR A FEMINISM THAT RECAPTURES ITS IMMEDIACY WHILE RECTIFYING ITS MISTAKES
ONE DOES NOT SMASH THE PATRIARCHY WITH A POTATO STAMP. GET YOUR EXTRA CREDIT FOR RECTIFYING INJUSTICES.
EVERYONE COME TO THE POC ZINE TOUR ON MONDAY 9/24 AT 538 JOHNSON #201 LEST U NEED TO FIND OUT WHY CRAFTING DOES NOT EQUAL FEMINISM. AND ALSO BECAUSE IT WILL RULE.

reblogging for my brilliant bandmate and bff’s commentary.

Yeah. I mean, femme presentation is fine and good! But the whole ‘I have to be cute in order to show the patriarchy that women aren’t scary’ thing is fucked. Looking palatable and appearing palatable in order to fuck the system up from inside or as a survival strategy is one thing. This is placation.
Also, the face of mainstream feminism is already a skinny pouty conventionally attractive white cis girl sooooooooooo.
